Rick Franklin and His Delta BluesBoys at Cassatts Cafe & Gallery August 16th, 7 - 9pm

RickFranklin"Hot yoga!  Yeah, that's what Rick Franklin and His Delta BluesBoys practice. And they say  practice makes perfect.  We don't know about that; no one dares to call us perfect.
In fact, we like some rough edges now and then. Come on and cross the Potomac, hear Rick  sing of bootleggin', prisons and  love, and everything in between. Sometimes love is a prison  and you can hear Rick and His Boys sing about that, too!  Make your reservation now 'cos if  love  is a prison, then the prison you want to be at is Cassatts. You might want to stay there for a  long, long time. Namaste, baby.

MSG - The Acoustic Blues Trio will be performing at the Spotlight by Starlight Series
MSG

Wednesday August 20th, 2008
7:30pm - 8:30pm

Mason District Park Amphitheater
6621 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA 22003

MSG equals great sound! What makes this acoustic trio truly unique is that, whether playing originals or cover songs, it authentically carries on the Piedmont Blues tradition. A rare find in this day and age.

Bio:
M.S.G. - The Acoustic Blues Trio performs traditional Piedmont blues. Their style of music has been influenced by the likes of Archie Edwards, Etta Baker, and Cephas & Wiggins. This band can raise the roof with some old-fashioned house party tunes, make you laugh with their witty originals and then make you weep with blues ballads! They all perform with the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation Band. They have performed at numerous regional festivals including: Blues in the 'Burg, Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Artscape, and Bayou Boogaloo. They have also had the honor of performing on the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage.

CD release performance of "GAYE WITHOUT SHAME" – at the home of Jeff Glassie and Julie Littell. This solo CD was produced by multiple Blues Music Award winner Bob Margolin, is fully steeped in the Blues tradition.  It carries the dignified and proud message of self-worth and empowerment. This CD also shares Gaye's hope for understanding and acceptance, and highlights some of the issues facing the struggle for human rights, as an activist for civil rights and for GLBT Equality. Gaye will perform different Blues stylings from the songs on the CD  -- New Orleans, Classic Blues, Piedmont, Delta, Jump Blues, Rhythm and Blues, and, of course, a Doo Wop.  Roddy Barnes is also scheduled to play along with Gaye on several song s.

Gaye says, “We have no idea what kind of reaction this CD might get.  If you are my friend, I ask you to buy one in the spirit of friendship.  If you are a Blues lover, I ask your support in understanding that the blues was born of oppression.  If you are GLBT, I ask you to listen to this CD to spread the word and worth of our cause.  If you believe in the worth of all people, your support is vital.”  The Glassie/Littell home is at 6622 Broad Street, Bethesda, MD 20816. Thunder's MouthFocus Alexandria presents Scott Ainslie on Sunday, September 21st, at 7  p.m. at Church of the Resurrection,
2280 N. Beauregard St., Alexandria, Va. 22311.

$15 general, $12 members. Contact: Kay at kay@focusmusic.org, 703-501-6061, or log onto www.focusmusic.org.

On the road 140 to 160 days a year, Scott performs and presents workshops in schools, libraries, community arts venues, colleges and festivals. He is also a respected instructor at music programs across the country and maintains an active schedule teaching guitar out of his home in Brattleboro, Vermont.

His work includes teaching concerts on the African roots of American music using live performances of blues, worksongs, gospel, jazz, and rhythm and blues to illustrate the historical and musical connections between African and American cultures.

After a typical performance, a SC English professor told Scott that he “does what Shakespeare recommends.”

“Shakespeare recommended a lot of things...” Scott noted with a smile.

“You teach by delight,” was the professor’s reply.

Scott’s performances always include interesting stories and anecdotes about the music that leave his audiences slyly better educated and fully entertained. Why? Because truth is the highest form of entertainment.
